Fuel Cells for Autonomous Vehicles

Fuel cells are an emerging energy conversion device which offer improved efficiency, low noise and reduced emissions. Imperial College have been asked to evaluate fuel cell system options for autonomous vehicles, and to consider the impact of military relevant fuels on fuel cell performance. Discussions with Rolls-Royce and Dstl have recently agreed two classes of application; fuel cells for autonomous air-borne vehicles, and fuel cells for autonomous underwater vehicles. Whilst these discussions have been taking place, background work has focussed on two areas; a review of fuel processing for fuel cells, and development of a system model on two types of solid oxide fuel cell, which provides the basis for subsequent analysis..
